Welcome to South Crofty Mine
To give you an idea of the unique situation Crofty encompasses, in a surface area of roughly four square miles:- There are 350 miles of known workings belonging to fourteen separate mines, of which South Crofty is just one. There are over 1,000 shafts of which only seven are truly vertical. The deepest workings are 900 metres (3,000 feet) below surface. Total estimated volume of removed rock/ore is 25,000,000 cubic metres (880,000,000 cubic feet / 32,000,000 cubic yards). This area has been worked continuously from the early 1500's to the present day. Total Copper Ore produced - 920,000 tons. Total Tin (Black) produced - 280,000 tons. Total Arsenic produced - 45,000 tons. Total Wolfram (Tungsten) produced - 6,000 tons. South Crofty pumped 1,500,00 gallons of water out of the mine every day (Geevor pumped 500,000 gallons per day, and Wheal Jane pumped between 8,000,000 to 14,000,000 gallons per day). Note – These facts relate to this area only and do not include the mines under Redruth or the mines of the Great Flat Lode. There are no official production figures before 1811.

UK. Located in the heart of Cornwall, "Crofty" continues
a mining tradition in Cornwall that stretches back to the
days of the Romans. Over the past many hundreds of years,
Cornwall has gained a reputation for the best "hard rock"
miners in the world, and, along with fishing and farming,
mining was one of the three main industries of Cornwall. |
